What Is Mahaparinirvan Diwas?
Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed every year on December 6 to honour Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The word “Mahaparinirvan” is taken from Buddhist philosophy and refers to the final liberation after death. Because Dr. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism shortly before his passing in 1956, this term is used to mark his spiritual and social transformation.
Why It Is Observed as Mahaparinirvan
Dr. Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, only weeks after converting to Buddhism along with lakhs of followers. His conversion was not only spiritual but also a strong stand against caste oppression. Mahaparinirvan Diwas reflects both his passing and the larger movement he inspired for human dignity, equality, and justice.
