India announce new ODI captain for the Australia series

Introduction

The excitement around the India vs Australia 2025 ODIseries has reached fever pitch as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced a new leadership era. Young opener Shubman Gill will lead Team India in the upcoming three-match ODI series, beginning October 19 in Perth.

This series also marks the long-awaited comeback of Indian legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will play their first international fixtures since March.

Shubman Gill Takes Charge as ODI Captain

In a major decision signaling the start of a new generation, Shubman Gill has been appointed India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. Gill’s appointment follows his impressive stint leading India to a 2-2 draw in the ICC World Test Championship series against England earlier this year, where he also finished as the highest run-scorer with 754 runs at an average of 75.40.

The young star’s calm leadership and consistent performances have made him one of the most promising names in Indian cricket. His elevation to ODI captaincy underlines India’s plan for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

After months away from international cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the squad purely as batters. Both stalwarts retired from T20I and Test cricket earlier this year, and will now focus exclusively on the 50-over format.

Their return adds stability and experience to a young Indian side touring Australia. Fans are eager to see how the duo performs after their brief hiatus, especially with another major ICC event on the horizon.
